James D’Arecca joined the Berkeley College School of Graduate Studies as Graduate Career Counselor in January 2017.

A four-year Career Services veteran of Berkeley College and Dover Business College, Mr. D’Arecca works on-site and online to prepare MBA students for career advancement.

Mr. D’Arecca recently shared his experiences in his new position with the School of Graduate Studies:

Q: What does your role entail in the School of Graduate Studies?

A: I provide Career Services assistance to MBA students seeking new job opportunities, as well as to those looking to advance their careers with their current employers. This includes help with drafting resumes, cover letters and thank you letters; job search strategies; and interviewing skills. I also organize career workshops, career fairs and networking opportunities, and help bring dynamic speakers to campus as part of the MBA Executive Speaker Series.

Q: What makes you passionate about your job? What are the most rewarding elements of your career?

A: I’m passionate about the opportunity to make a real difference in our students’ lives, which usually includes making a difference in the lives of their families as well. The greatest reward is the happy phone call, an email, or a visit (this is the best!) from a student who says: “I got the job! Thank you for your help. I couldn’t have done this without you (and the help of everyone at Berkeley College along the way).”

Q: What is the most important thing a student should know when pursuing a new job or a promotion?

A: The most important thing for a student to do is to stay positive, always follow up, and keep communicating with his or her Career Counselor. The process can be long and frustrating, but they must continue to apply for new positions and stay positive. There is a right time, a right place, and a right job for everyone!

Q: In your experience, how does an MBA contribute to career success?

A: The MBA contributes to career success by giving students a career-focused education covering leadership, management, and the important core values of today, leading to well-rounded, real-world preparation for the challenges ahead. Additionally, it shows employers their drive, determination and commitment to succeed.
