Jason De La Cruz
Robert Maher Recipient 2017

Jason De La Cruz is a quiet and reserved young man who immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic in 2008. Shortly after starting at Berkeley College in August 2014, his grandmother passed away, and so Jason began taking care of his ailing grandfather. Because of this, he missed opportunities to spend time with friends, play sports, and simply be a teenager. But the experiences of being a caregiver, coupled with financial struggles that meant sometimes going without food, have shaped him into who he is today. Each challenge and setback has been an opportunity for motivation and growth.

Jason is community-minded and active within his church by feeding the less fortunate. He cares for all those around him and is willing to offer a helping hand without thinking twice. He pushes himself to excel, and you would never guess the extent of his struggles as he greets you with his warm smile. Jason is proud to be the first of his family to attend and graduate from college. After obtaining his Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Jason plans to pursue a Master’s degree.

Jason says, "I became a better person by doing what I learned from my grandmother, always giving my best at anything I did."
