Benefits of Live Green Plants
Campus Sustainability Day - Fall 2007

Berkeley College campuses hosted events to celebrate Earth Day 2008!

On April 23, at 11:00 am, Garret Mountain students, staff, and faculty commemorated the new trees that have been planted to replace trees that were removed for the new parking lot. Students were then invited to "Recycle Your Style" by bringing in their old T-shirts and other clothing items to "recycle" with tie-dye. They also had the opportunity to tie-dye canvas bags to replace plastic bag shopping bags. Students will also plant flowers in May.

Middlesex students, staff, and faculty were invited to participate in a tree planting ceremony on April 23 to celebrate both Earth Day and Arbor Day.

The Bergen Campus invited students, staff, and faculty to beautify the campus courtyard by helping to plant flowers on May 7.

On April 22, the Newark Campus played an Earth Day video all day. On April 23, students and staff shared what the campus is doing to conserve energy and resources at the Town Hall meeting. In May, the staff will decorate the campus with flowers and plants.

NYC Midtown and Lower Manhattan students, faculty and staff were invited to attend EarthFair 2008, held on Vanderbilt Avenue along the west side of Grand Central Terminal on April 18 and 19. EarthFair featured musical performances as well as displays and activities for children and adults by environmental non-profits and green companies. In addition, visitors to Grand Central Terminal viewed The Giant Earth Images show in the Main Concourse April 14-22. Both EarthFair and Earth Week were sponsored by Earth Day New York.

The Westchester Campus hosted a Green Fair on April 22 and distributed information on bottled water vs. tap water, benefits of plants, Earth Day history, and energy-saving tips. Students, staff, and faculty were invited to participate in a plant raffle. Individuals who brought in plants to decorate the campus were be eligible to win prizes. Whole Foods provided refreshments. Students will also be cleaning up Tibets Park.

The Online Campus hosted a discussion board on Earth Day related topics and shared online resources.

Many thanks to campus administration, Student Development staff, Project GreenPath committee members, and student and staff volunteers organized these events.

Turn the Tide

Sponsored by the New American Dream community, Turn the Tide is a program that promotes nine actions virtually anyone can take to help take care of the environment. Participants who sign up (it's FREE) can track their actions and environmental impact, as well as see the cumulative impact of all participants in North America. For every one thousand participants who commit to the actions, carbon dioxide emissions are reduced by 4 million pounds annually, and 48 million of gallons of water, 12,250 pounds of sea life, and 170 trees are saved as well.

The Turn the Tide actions are simple:

Skip a car trip each week

Replace one beef meal each week

Shift your shrimp consumption

Declare your independence from junk mail

Replace four standard light bulbs with energy-efficient compact fluorescent lights (CFLs)

Move the thermostat 3°F

Eliminate lawn and garden pesticides

Install an efficient showerhead and low flow faucet aerators

Inspire two friends

Current Green Initiatives at Berkeley College

Automatic paper towel dispensers and foam soap dispensers can now be found in all campus restrooms, and are helping to reduce resources and eliminate waste. Berkeley College is using paper towels made from recycled paper. All faucets that have been replaced are either automatic faucets or run only for a short time.

Berkeley has been successfully using Pharos Systems print management and copy control software at each campus to help reduce paper waste. Since January 2005, we have cut paper use in the classrooms by over 60% and have saved more than one million pages per year.

Videoconference facilities are available at the Garret Mountain, Westchester, and NYC Midtown campuses. The Project GreenPath committee meets via videoconference to avoid as much as possible creating fossil fuel emissions in transit.

Air conditioning thermostats are reset in the evenings and on weekends.

Office paper that is shredded by an outside vendor is then recycled.

The Newark Campus installed energy saving water chillers, heaters, boilers, and other HVAC equipment, as well as energy efficient lighting for classrooms and offices, and a gas generator. Many of these features were approved through the PSEG Energy SmartStart Program.

Green flooring was installed in the NYC Midtown Campus elevator.

The Westchester Campus installed motion sensors for lighting.
