Berkeley has always believed in a student’s potential in addition to his or her past performance. To help some students prepare for the higher level of work they’ll encounter in college, Berkeley has developed programs to address specific needs. Incoming students will be informed of which programs are recommended and/or required before beginning studies at Berkeley. Bridge to Success and Jumpstart are designed to assist students in the quarter before they are matriculated into Berkeley College.
In this program, students hone their math, study, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills. In addition to challenging them intellectually, Bridge to Success provides an early introduction to the expectations and culture of college life.
Bridge to Success was designed to help ease the adjustment to college life for students with scores of 40 or below on the Math section of the Accuplacer exam. The purpose is to help them build a foundation for academic success during their degree program at Berkeley. There is no tuition cost for this program when taken prior to the beginning of the first quarter of study at Berkeley.
This rigorous, five-week program incorporates in-class sessions on key topics from:
In addition, Bridge to Success helps students to:
Schedule
The Bridge to Success program will be labeled BTS090 Bridge to Success on the student's transcript. If a student earns a grade of C or better, he or she will be given credit for DED099 Transitional Math. If a student fails to earn a passing grade in two attempts, he or she will not be able to enroll at Berkeley.
In this program, students can improve reading, writing, and math skills. Jumpstart was designed for students who have already been accepted to Berkeley, but need to develop their academic skills. Jumpstart courses are offered during each quarter at all Berkeley locations and online. The program is voluntary, but strongly recommended prior to beginning the first quarter of study at Berkeley.
For those students who take DED051 Foundations of Critical Reading, DED061 Foundations of Critical Writing, and DED099 Transitional Math as part of the Jumpstart program prior to matriculating, the classes are offered at no tuition cost. Students who are required to take DED051, DED061, and DED099 as part of their academic program and choose not to enroll in Jumpstart will be required to take these classes at the regular tuition rate during their first academic year.
Schedule
During the Summer Quarter the Jumpstart program runs four days a week for four weeks:
During the Fall, Winter, or Spring Quarter the on-site Jumpstart program runs in the evenings and on Saturdays:
Online - DED051 Foundations of Critical Reading, DED061 Foundations of Critical Writing, and DED099 Transitional Math will also be offered online during Spring and Summer quarters.
Individuals should contact their Admissions Representative or Advisor for more information about these programs.
