The honors students have been studying with Dr. Melissa Baralt, Professor of Math and Sciences in the School of Liberal Arts. Dr. Baralt loves teaching and is especially proud of the honors students. “Honors students are a refreshing experience! It is remarkable to note the tenacity of many of these students and their capacity to participate and follow through. My Honors Program semester was simply amazing; the class was small, and it enabled us to form relationships that allowed students to learn beyond their intended capacities. I enjoyed the didactic of the program, and it was a wonderful experience,” she said.
According to Dr. Baralt, the diversity of the Berkeley student population makes her teaching experience unique. She continually strives to keep students challenged and interested in their studies. Her teaching style and dynamic personality factored into Dr. Baralt receiving the Faculty of the Year Award in 2012. What advice does Dr. Baralt give to students? “I would say, ‘Don't wait to get left behind to catch up.’ Everything starts with will. You have to want to do well and be consistent. You can't always do it on your own, so seek the help you need to allow you to succeed.”

Honors student Fatimah Elsayed has been working as a tutor in the Academic Support Center. She shared the following about her experience: “Knowing I provide such a valuable service to other students is a phenomenal feeling. When I am not in class or working, I have peers asking for my opinion of their own analysis of a topic or for help with a complex math question. It is very moving.”
