Academic Service Learning

What is Service Learning?

CELT Academic Service Learning logoService learning is a philosophy of experiential learning in which students participate in community service, not only to meet the needs of the community, but also to develop critical thinking skills, commitment to values, skills for effective citizenship, and the ability to use the community activity as a means of understanding course concepts. It is an objectives anom-based program that involves students in some form of required community service and uses that activity as a means of understanding course concepts. Service learning is a pedagogical approach whereby students engage in a service activity that benefits the common good.

What is the goal of Academic Service Learning?

The goal of ASL is to blend service with learning goals and activities in such a way that the two reinforce each other and produce a greater impact than either could produce alone.

The critical elements of ASL are:

  • Meaningful service to community
  • Clearly conceptualized connection between course objectives and service activities
  • Structured opportunities for students to synthesize and derive new meaning from their experiences as they relate those experiences to course goals and objectives
