Meet Lisa St. Hilaire, Career Counselor, Berkeley College Online®
Lisa St. Hilaire, Career Counselor, Berkeley College Online® has spent two years connecting Berkeley College students with internships and jobs they can be proud of. We spoke with her about the successes and challenges she encounters every day as a Career Services associate in the online realm.
Q: How does the online Career Services process differ from on-site Career Services? How is it the same?
The online Career Services Department is different from on-site career counseling because we do not meet our students in person. We serve them by communicating through telephone, email, and video conferencing. Our student and graduate populations are not just in the tristate area, but throughout the United States, as well as in countries such as Turkey, Dubai, Sweden, and Brazil, to name a few. We provide an excellent online resource center through Berkeley College LibGuides. This is where we post monthly webinars for our students and graduates to review such topics as interviewing, resume building, and transitioning from military life to civilian life.
Q: What are some of the services offered by online Career Services? What kind of technology do you utilize to offer these services?
We offer everything from resume writing to building your brand, the use of LinkedIn and its importance, dressing for success, and internship or job placement. We recently started using a new feature called Snagit that allows us to create a more appealing webinar to keep students engaged. For our students and graduates who need assistance with interviews, we conduct mock interviews using Skype for Business. Systemwide, Career Services is provided with quarterly training to learn new and innovative ways to keep students and graduates engaged.
Q: How do you network with employers and tell them about our students?
Our department is all about professional development. We belong to organizations such as the New Jersey Business and Industry Association (NJBIA), Eastern Association of Colleges and Employers (EACE), and Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). We attend events hosted by these organizations and network with potential employers who may offer internships and job placement. Through these organizations, we continually build strong employer relations.
Q: What is your favorite part of your job?
I have a passion for assisting students and graduates to the best of my ability. When I receive that “thank you” email or telephone call, it is truly rewarding. The other is the bond I have built with the people I work with. Berkeley College Online is truly like a family.
