Berkeley College alumna Carla Valencia

Since 2005, Carla Valencia has been working her way up the ranks at Syska Hennessy Group, a global consulting, engineering and commissioning firm. By the time she discovered Berkeley College, she was ready to take the next steps toward better career opportunities.

A resident of Queens, NY, Ms. Valencia earned a B.B.A. in Business Administration - Management from Berkeley College in 2012. After transitioning to Syska’s Human Resources department, she went on to earn a Certificate in High Impact Presentations from Dale Carnegie in 2014, and a Certificate in Human Resources Management at Cornell University’s Industrial and Labor Relations School in 2015.

Taking classes both online and on site in Midtown Manhattan while continuing to work at Syska Hennessy Group, she credits Berkeley College’s professors and interactive approach to teaching for her professional growth. “Most professors incorporated open forums in the classroom, where I found myself sharing ideas and views with my classmates directly,” Ms. Valencia said. “It was great to be a part of a class where the teacher encouraged interaction, and was not just reading from a textbook.”

Having received several promotions over the years, Ms. Valencia is currently a Talent Acquisition Specialist. In this role she oversees all phases of professional level recruitment, as well as the selection process for technical engineering and corporate needs for the firm’s nationwide locations.

Up Close with Carla Valencia

What does success mean to you?

Success is being in a position to help others. I often encounter struggles as a Latina woman in a male-dominated field. I feel that I need to work twice as hard to gain the respect of others, but that’s something that fuels me to leave no room for mistakes. My hope is that by sharing my experiences with struggles and success, I can help others feel that anything is possible.

What initially inspired you to enroll in Berkeley College?

I heard about Berkeley College from an ad near where I worked in midtown Manhattan. The factor that made me decide to take that next step at Berkeley College toward gaining better career opportunities was the College’s level of professionalism when I visited the school.

How did Berkeley College prepare you for success?

By providing great professors who not only went through the course curriculum, but also shared real-life experiences. The professors really give it their all to support the growth and success of students who show dedication.
I also found the electives to be interesting. They helped me to further develop my personal views due to the diversity of the classroom and students’ viewpoints. The juggling of deadlines for the classes, and the hard work it took to maintain good grades, also prepared me for the real world.

In which way(s) do you see yourself being successful in the future?

Taking my career to the next level by being more strategic in our recruiting practices. Also by increasing diversity across the firm, especially in STEM careers where female engineers and minorities fall behind in STEM Bachelor’s degrees.

What advice would you offer today’s college-bound students?

Do not be afraid of challenges and hard work because they pay off. Strive to achieve the “wow” factor in everything you do. Also, no matter where you are in your career stay humble. I try to live by the quote, “Work hard in silence, let your success be your noise.”

What was your most memorable moment at Berkeley College?

The professors that truly cared and gave it their all to provide a great learning experience.
