Berkeley Graduate Lives the American Dream

One could say that Berkeley College graduate Ruben Cubides is living the American Dream. Over a three-year period, Mr. Cubides became a US citizen, got married, graduated with his Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, and most recently, was featured on a billboard for thousands of drivers to see on Route 80 in New Jersey.

“I felt very happy and proud - not only because I was the person on that billboard, but because that image represented the thousands of students like me who come to Berkeley College with the dream of obtaining a professional career and being successful in life,” Mr. Cubides shared.

Originally from Colombia, Mr. Cubides had previously been working as an engineer. When he began to look for a better education, he made the biggest decision of his life and came to America.

“Despite being a graduate and engineer in my country, the decision to move to the United States meant to leave everything behind and start all over from scratch.”

Shortly after receiving his Associates degree, Mr. Cubides discovered Berkeley College and its career focused programs. It was then that he knew he wanted to pursue his Bachelor degree.

“I took a look at Berkeley’s website, and in that moment, I knew Berkeley College was the best option to continue with my professional education.”

Although Mr. Cubides faced his set of challenges, like English as a second language and balancing a full time job, he managed to secure a place on the Dean’s and President’s lists more than once. These sets of challenges and accomplishments have prepared him for his career as a Collections Specialist for American Transit Insurance Company.

Berkeley College strives to give students extraordinary opportunities, just like Mr. Cubides. Recently, Berkeley ran a Billboard Contest for their 2017 graduates. The rules: post a picture from graduation to Instagram with the contest hashtag. The student with the most likes would be featured on a Berkeley College billboard in June. Mr. Cubides was the winner with 1,494 likes.

“Seeing myself up there as I looked at that billboard brought so many thoughts and feelings, thoughts of how things would have been had I not taken this wonderful path, feelings of how deeply I appreciated that moment.”

Ruben Cubides’ journey as a Berkeley College student has brought him many places, and he hopes prospects will follow suit.

“Berkeley College has been a place where I had the privilege of meeting many people from different parts of the world. Having the opportunity to know different cultures and religions was one of the most enriching and memorable experiences. It is something that I will always remember.”
