Berkeley Today Stories
From Berkeley College to the Board Room: Julio Monroy
Ten years ago, Julio Monroy was just beginning his journey with Berkeley College. Today, he sits on the Board of Trustees, in addition to working as the Director of Global Strategic Marketing for a healthcare organization. In his own words, Mr. Monroy describes how he has found himself serving the College that gave him his start.
My journey with Berkeley College started in 2007. I decided to enroll because I recognized its business orientation and the professional atmosphere throughout the campus. As the athletics program started to develop, I joined the first Berkeley Knights basketball team under the leadership of Professor Chris Christiansen, who to this day remains a good friend and an outstanding mentor. I believe that the strong academic program coupled with knowledgeable and dedicated professors helped me to prepare for the business world. As I started to approach the second half of my academic career, with the help of Career Services I was fortunate enough to land an internship in the marketing department at Pfizer, which eventually turned into a full-time position. This is where I developed a passion for marketing and eventually pursued my MBA in Marketing at St. John’s University in Queens, New York.
When I completed my MBA, I returned to Berkeley College as an adjunct professor. I taught a series of management courses at different campuses in New York City for five years. Unfortunately, as my career continued to progress, I found myself with less time to commit to teaching, although I do hope to return to it someday.
In 2012, I received an unexpected phone call from Tim Luing, who at the time was a member of the Board and currently holds the position of Executive Vice President. Apparently, my name was submitted for consideration by Will Moya, who I had completed my undergraduate program with a few years earlier and who currently serves as Vice President, Campus Operations. After a few rounds of interviews, I was granted the great fortune of becoming a member of the Board of Trustees, a position I have now held for five years. As a member of the Board, my responsibilities include: contributing toward the long-term strategic planning for the College; establishing policy and procedures for the educational programs; reviewing and approving the operating and capital budget; and supporting the College’s engagement in campus and community initiatives.
Outside of Berkeley College I am the Director of Global Strategic Marketing for the acute care therapies division at Getinge, a healthcare and life sciences organization.
I have now been affiliated with the College in multiple capacities for almost 20 years, which gives me a unique perspective to its evolvement over time. I also believe that being a Berkeley alumnus, having taught here for several years, and being in the healthcare industry--an area of strategic importance to the College-- allow me to contribute significantly as a Board member.
Participating on the Board all these years has been extremely rewarding. It is truly remarkable to see all the resources the College provides to its students to ensure their success through graduation and beyond. My biggest piece of advice to current students is to follow your heart and passion, but know that you are not alone in your journey. We are all here support you along the way.
