Chair, Surgical Technology and Surgical Processing Technician programs

Joseph E. Charleman, MS, CST, CSFA, CRCST, LPN, was appointed Chair of the Surgical Technology and Surgical Processing Technician programs in 2007. In this role, he develops course outlines, provides academic guidance to students, and serves as a clinical instructor. He also works as a Surgical Technician/Surgical First Assistant and Operating Room Assistant Supervisor at Associated Surgeons of New Jersey in Englewood, NJ, managing schedules and inventory, billing, and insurance authorizations since 2003.

Mr. Charleman also has worked as an Operating Room Technician at St. Francis Hospital in Jersey City, NJ, and at the Meadowlands Hospital in Secaucus, NJ. In addition, he served as an Instructor of Surgical Technology at the Ultrasound School of Diagnostic Imaging in Edison, NJ. He is the author of several articles and books. In 2014, he received the Patriotic Employer Award from the U.S. Department of Defense, and in 2015 he received the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the International Association of Central Service Materiels Management. Mr. Charleman serves on the Education Committee of the Association of Surgical Technology, and on the Board of Directors for the Council on Surgical and Perioperative Safety. He also serves as a Trip Administrator for Medical Missions Abroad for Healing the Children New Jersey, Inc.

Mr. Charleman is enrolled in a D.B.A. degree program in Health Care Administration at Northcentral University in Prescott Valley, AZ. He earned an M.S. in Healthcare Education from New England College in Henniker, NH; a B.S. in Organizational Management from Nyack College in Nyack, NY; and a Diploma in Practical Nursing from Eastwick College, HoHoKus School of Medical Sciences in Ramsey, NJ. He holds national certifications in Surgical Technology and Surgical First Assisting. He also holds certifications as a Licensed Practical Nurse, Registered Central Service Technician, and as an approved instructor by the International Association of Central Service Materials Management.
