New Jersey Homemaker-Home Health Aide Certification Training
Duration: 76 hours
Certification: Successful completion of this course is a prerequisite to becoming a Certified Homemaker-Home Health Aide.
Classroom and clinical/laboratory instruction are taught by Berkeley College faculty who are registered professional nurses approved by the New Jersey Board of Nursing.
The course consists of 60 hours of classroom instruction and 16 hours of clinical/laboratory instruction. The New Jersey Board of Nursing requires students to attend all 76 hours of instruction in order to be eligible for certification.
Under the supervision of a registered professional nurse, Certified Homemaker Home Health Aides follow a nursing plan of care to help people with disabilities, chronic illness, or cognitive impairment with activities of daily living at the patient's home or in a care facility to provide the patient with an appropriate therapeutic environment. CHHAs assist with everyday tasks such as bathing and grooming, changing bandages and dressing wounds, light housekeeping, laundry, meal planning and preparation, medication reminders, errands, assistance with exercise regimens and companionship. They monitor vital signs and report changes in health status and may be able to give a patient medication under the direction of a registered professional nurse.
There are requirements for certification in addition to completing this course. A criminal background check is a Board of Nursing prerequisite for certification as a CHHA in New Jersey. For additional prerequisites, visit the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affair’s web site at New Jersey Division of Consumer Affaris: Home Health Aide
