Meet Sharon Gaines-Sarigü, Online M.B.A. Student

Sharon Gaines Berkeley

Graduate student Sharon Gaines-Sarigü is a Team Assistant in Administrative Services for PwC, one of the Big Four accounting firms.

Sharon Gaines-Sarigü, a resident of Brooklyn, NY, is a mother, a wife, an author, and an entrepreneur. She is also enrolled in the online Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) in Management program at Berkeley College.

She feels the M.B.A. curriculum has had practical application to her career as a Team Assistant in Administrative Services for PwC, one of the Big Four accounting firms, as well as to her business, Do Something Fanatical, which has a positive mission to connect, educate, and unite people.

“Pursuing my M.B.A. has given me the confidence to network and showcase my talent,” she said.

Ms. Gaines-Sarigü, who expects to complete her degree in 2018, recently shared her experience in the M.B.A. program:

Q: You completed your undergraduate degree, a B.B.A. in Marketing, at Berkeley College in 2009. What initially made you enroll at Berkeley College?

A. I left college many years ago when I became a single mom. When my son was 13, he found out that I put my aspirations of getting a degree on hold so that I could be a full-time mom. He told me that he was old enough to take care of himself and he urged me to go back to school. Intimidated by statistics and algebra, my son tutored me in both classes on our morning commutes on the train. With his help and encouragement, I was able to pass both classes and was well on my way to finishing my undergraduate degree.

Q: What inspired you to continue your education in the Berkeley College School of Graduate Studies?

A. Education is a big part of my family and upbringing. My grandmother only completed 10 years of school and my grandfather completed six. They had 10 children, including my mom. Every one of their children completed college and most of their grandchildren have degrees. The importance of education has been instilled in me since I was a young child.

Q: What are the benefits of the online M.B.A. program?

A. I love the flexibility of taking online classes. I’m a nature lover. I walk between 20 and 25 miles every weekend with my family. I like the fact that I am able to go out and exercise and come home to complete my coursework at any time during the day.

Q: How are you applying the M.B.A. curriculum in your career?

A. I work in Administrative Services at PwC, one of the Big Four accounting firms. As a Team Assistant, I support the Market Team and internal customer. My Organizational Behavior and Leadership class was supplemented with an Organizational Behavior and Leadership practicum. These two courses have helped define what type of manager I aspire to be. I am being coached by my manager, who is a Berkeley College alumnus. I have been able to provide valuable feedback in our meetings by applying some of the theories that I have learned in class. Pursuing my M.B.A. has given me the confidence to network and showcase my talent.

Q: What are your long-term career goals?

A. I’m an entrepreneur and an author. I would love to work in creative content as an associate or manager and continue to run my online company. An M.B.A. from Berkeley College will help me with the leadership framework necessary to build my career at any organizational level within my firm.
