Student Uses Skills Learned in the Classroom to Complete Internship Assignments
Raffaele Contuzzi was given responsibility from the moment he started his internship in the marketing department at the North Jersey Federal Credit Union (NJFCU) in Totowa. When the 12-week practicum ended, Mr. Contuzzi left the company excited to pursue a career in the field of marketing.
“I learned so much, and my only regret is that I didn’t do more than one internship while I was in college. They are great resume boosters,” said Mr. Contuzzi, who graduated from Berkeley College with a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing in April 2015.
Mr. Contuzzi’s administrative responsibilities at the NJFCU included updating client lists, organizing a marketing mailer to promote vacation loans, and organizing and maintaining the filing system. He drew from skills learned at Berkeley College when asked to create a PowerPoint presentation proposing new marketing techniques.
“One of the techniques I suggested was to run weekly giveaways on social media, such as offering gift cards to customers to encourage them to visit the company’s Facebook® page,” said Mr. Contuzzi, who currently works as the Manager of Dynamite Falls Adventure Golf in Fairfield, where in addition to overseeing employees, he determines marketing strategies for the company.
The NJFCU started a Pinterest page shortly after Mr. Contuzzi was placed in his internship by the Berkeley College Career Services Department. He was asked to manage that page and to research and post relevant articles.
“I knew from college research that the readers of Pinterest were women between 18 and 40, mostly mothers,” Mr. Contuzzi said. “I chose articles that would appeal to that population. For example, one was on teaching your children how to save money.”
He also linked Pinterest to the financial institution’s Facebook page to increase visibility and help build brand awareness. In addition to valuable hands-on experience, the internship included regular meetings with the marketing director.
“I really appreciated that he took time out of his busy schedule to meet with me,” Mr. Contuzzi said. “I learned a lot from those meetings, including that you can never stop building on your skills because marketing tools are always changing.”
