The Security Officer Registration Act (SORA) training is required for all security officer positions in New Jersey. The SORA training program includes 24 hours of classroom instruction by a New Jersey State Police SORA certified instructor. The training must be completed within 30 days.

Training Course Tuition:

Tuition: $125

Note: During the first session, the instructor will review the additional fees (not included in the tuition), which need to be submitted by each applicant to the Division of State Police. The amount of the non-refundable application fee and the cost for fingerprinting are identified in the Security Officer Registration Act (SORA) FAQ

Length of Training Course: 24 hours (completed within 30 days)

This training course introduces students to the fundamentals of security, with an emphasis on homeland security and public safety concerns. The training course also covers the security officer’s professional duties and responsibilities, ethical obligations, professional conduct, communication and report writing, incident and emergency response, and terrorism awareness. The course culminates in students taking the New Jersey Security Officer Registration Act (SORA) exam.

Important Notes:

1. No person can be issued a certificate or registration as a security officer if the person has been convicted of: a crime of the first, second, third or fourth degree; any offense involving the unlawful use, possession or sale of a controlled dangerous substance as defined in N.J.S.2C:35-2; or any offense where the registration of the individual would be contrary to the public interest, as determined by the Superintendent.

2. Each applicant has to submit to the Superintendent the applicant’s fingerprints and written consent for a criminal history record background check to be performed. The Superintendent compares these to fingerprints on file with the State Bureau of Identification in the Division of State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, consistent with applicable State and federal laws, rules and regulations.

Dr. Edward Lynskey is a faculty member from the Berkeley College School of Professional Studies within the Department of Justice Studies and will be the SORA certified instructor for the 24-hour training course. Dr. Lynskey served in the United States Marine Corps and was a state trooper with the New Jersey State Police for 28 years.
