Students Residing in White Plains Enjoy Supportive Environment
Shirley Joseph has fond memories of life as a student resident at Berkeley College in White Plains. Ms. Joseph lived almost three years in Cottage Place, a six-story modern building located adjacent to Berkeley College, where she enjoyed a strong bond with peers and gained valuable work experience in the local business community.
“The majority of the students were very close – like one big family,” said Ms. Joseph, who graduated from Berkeley College at the end of the summer 2014 quarter with a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing. “Westchester County is very welcoming and supportive of Berkeley College, and I made many friends and great connections within the community.”
Ms. Joseph especially enjoyed preparing food with her roommates and then inviting other residents to share in their meal. Students took turns cooking for one another, she said, and that provided a terrific bonding experience.
Berkeley College student residents benefit from the convenience of classes, the Library, and academic support services right at their doorstep. Residents have free membership to Crunch Gym, within walking distance of the College, and also enjoy a greater opportunity to participate in student clubs, join athletic teams, or engage in extracurricular activities.
“White Plains is an amazing city with lots of great things to do,” Ms. Joseph said. “The grocery stores stay open until 2 a.m. The City Center has a movie theater and there are malls, bars, and countless restaurants where students can try out many new foods.”
Student residents at Berkeley College are provided with a strong support system to help them succeed in an academic environment. Resident assistants run weekly educational, cultural, academic, spiritual, physical, or intellectual programs. Activities get underway for newcomers every fall with a team-building course at the Palisades Climb Adventure center in West Nyack, NY.
“The residence halls are stepping stones that teach our students lifelong skills while guiding them through the journey of educational growth and independent living,” said Suzeana Stewart, Berkeley College Resident Director, White Plains.
