Berkeley College Helps Shape Future for Fashion Marketing and Management Student

Danielle MitropoulosDanielle Mitropoulos turned down two full scholarships to enroll in the Fashion Marketing and Management program at Berkeley College in New York City. Now a senior, Ms. Mitropoulos has no regrets.

“I knew that I wanted to enter the fashion industry when I came from Boston to Berkeley College in New York City, but I wasn’t serious about a career direction,” Ms. Mitropoulos said. “Berkeley College helped me to get more grounded and realistic about my goals and how to achieve them.”

Berkeley College students, she said, benefit greatly from being taught and mentored by instructors who not only have years of experience in the fashion industry, but who also work closely with the Office of Career Services to place students in rewarding internships and careers.

“While working in my internships I discovered just how much what we are learning in the classroom at Berkeley applies to every day on the job. Our professors really know what’s going on inside the industry and that provides us with an edge when competing for internships and jobs,” said Ms. Mitropoulos, who served internships at Versace and BCBG as a sophomore, and last year managed a team of 50 students working behind the scenes during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. She is currently interning at Tinder Inc., in New York City. The company manages public relations for The Daily Front Row, an IMG Fashion Company publication.

The fashion student credits Fashion Marketing and Management Instructor Robert Woods with helping to prepare her for job interviews.

“What I love about Professor Woods’ classes is that they cover the basics. He puts us through mock interviews and teaches us everything we need to know including how to shake a person’s hand correctly,” Ms. Mitropoulos said.

With graduation fast approaching (June, 2011), Ms. Mitropoulos has no worries about entering the job market. She has been offered a full-time position at Synergy Events/Emerging Trends. The marketing company promotes fashion shows in Boston, Detroit and Washington, DC.

“I cannot express enough how Berkeley’s professors and Career Services personnel have helped prepare me for my future,” Ms. Mitropoulos said.
