Whether you’re trying to find part-time work to help pay for college tuition, or hoping to land the career of your dreams before you walk across the graduation stage in the coming months, networking with the right employer at a Berkeley College Career Fair can lead you in the right direction, and jumpstart the interview process.

“These career fairs are so important to our students and graduates,” said Jairo Borja, Director, Business Development, Career Services, who is responsible for planning and coordinating the events every year. “It provides them with a platform to connect with various organizations in their field of study.”

On-campus career fairs afford students the opportunity to learn more about areas in a particular industry that they may have never considered.

Employers understand how Berkeley College prepares its students and graduates to enter the workforce. By participating in a career fair, students build the confidence needed to speak with employers directly. “The more confident our students are, it will increase their chances of landing a job or internship,” Jairo explained.

Career Fair in NYCWith approximately 15-20 companies seeking new hires at each event, the “Show Me the Money” Career Fair held October 10 at the NYC Midtown campus focused on the financial sector, with employers like TD Bank, Allstate, Qi Financial Strategies, and more. Approximately 50 students and graduates attended.

“I think the career fair is an amazing experience,” Jonathan Soler said. “It really takes away all of your nervous feelings because it creates an easy environment to talk with companies that want to hire students like us!”

The New York City student looks forward to receiving his Associate in Applied Science degree in Financial Services from Berkeley College in 2019.

How to Navigate a Career Fair

Map a Strategy. Know which employers will be there and who you would like to approach first. Have plenty of resumes on hand.

Practice Your Elevator Pitch. Prepare a 30-second highlight reel that tells who you are. Then practice, practice, practice.

Have Answers Ready. Employers may ask, “What do you know about us?” and “Why do you want to work for us?”

Don’t Limit Yourself. Look at the opportunities at each company, regardless of its area of focus. For example, most companies offer positions in marketing.

Dress for Success. First impressions are important. Wear business attire and look your best.

Follow Up. Within 24 hours, follow up with the employer via email.
