Berkeley College AI Principles
Berkeley College embraces and encourages the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) throughout the institution. AI is a transformative technology with profound implications for teaching, learning, and administrative operations. These principles define the principles, guidelines, and practices that Berkeley College will follow in the development, deployment, and secure and ethical use of AI within the community.
Berkeley College is committed to the responsible and ethical use of AI. To this end, Berkeley College will:
- Promote principles of accuracy, fairness, transparency, and accountability for Berkeley College’s AI systems.
- Prohibit the use of AI for any unlawful or unethical activities. Regularly assess the impact of AI systems on privacy and security on an annual basis.
Berkeley College’s Data Security Policy is intended to:
- Safeguard Berkeley College's existing data in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, and institutional policies in the AI context.
- Implement and maintain cybersecurity controls to safeguard any new AI systems and their data from threats.
- Educate faculty and staff on using AI systems in compliance with Berkeley College’s Data Security Policy.
- Review AI systems to comply with security policies, detect vulnerabilities, and verify that data protection controls remain effective.
AI technologies should be accessible for all individuals, including those with disabilities.
Berkeley College will:
- Encourage the integration of AI into relevant academic programs, where it has the potential to improve students' learning experiences.
- Promote the responsible use of AI as a tool for idea generation, research assistance, and workplace innovation, within the parameters of Berkeley College’s Academic Integrity Policy.
To ensure proper decision-making, Berkeley College will:
- Through the Administrative Technology Committee and the TL/DL Committee, provide oversight of AI projects, compliance with ethical guidelines, and risk management.
- Regularly review and update relevant AI principles and policies to adapt to evolving technologies and ethical standards.
To build trust and ensure accountability in Berkeley College’s AI initiatives, Berkeley College will:
- Make AI decision-making processes transparent and explainable whenever possible.
- Implement mechanisms for reporting and addressing concerns related to AI use.
In alignment with our commitment to treat everyone fairly, Berkeley College will:
- Regularly review AI systems to identify and address biases and unfairness.
- Strive for diverse representation in datasets used for AI training to reduce bias.
Berkeley College will continue to develop educational programs, workshops, and resources to raise awareness and understanding of AI ethics, principles, and applications among students, faculty, and staff.
Berkeley College will comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards related to AI use and development.
Berkeley College will follow the current protocol for reporting and addressing incidents involving AI misuse or unethical behavior.
These principles will be reviewed and updated as necessary to reflect changes in AI technology, ethical guidelines, and legal requirements.
