Join the Berkeley College Fashion Department for a night of celebration, film, and networking as we honor the legendary Stephen Burrows! Enjoy a movie and popcorn while learning about his incredible journey in fashion as the only African American designer who was part of the historic Battle of Versailles.

Stephen Burrows is a pioneering American fashion designer who broke barriers with his revolutionary style. Starting with his ready-to-wear collection in 1969, he soon opened “Stephen Burrows World” at Henri Bendel in 1970, becoming the first African American designer to gain international fame. Known for his daring use of stretch fabrics, close-fitting silhouettes, and the iconic “lettuce edge,” Burrows redefined American fashion. He made history in the 1973 Versailles fashion show alongside designers like Halston and Oscar de la Renta. His creations have been worn by icons like Diana Ross, Oprah, and Michelle Obama. Today, Burrows continues to shape fashion through ongoing collaborations and design projects.
