To capitalize on today’s myriad of opportunities, the Berkeley College Bachelor of Science in Applied Media program offers you an innovative and updated curriculum that reflects the state of the professional media world. With a focus on three critical aspects—verbal communication, written communication, and visual communication—the program provides a well-rounded foundation in traditional and emerging media skills to prepare you for a wide range of media-based careers in areas such as public relations, marketing, advertising, technical writing, journalism, news analysis, podcasting, and more.

Faculty

Gregory Hotchkiss, ThD

Faculty Lead, Applied Media

Dr. Gregory Hotchkiss serves as the Faculty Lead for the new Applied Media degree program. He chaired the faculty team for the development of the new program. He is a professor in the Humanities within the Division of General Education. Professor Hotchkiss holds a ThD in Anglican Studies from the General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church with a focus on religion, politics, and violence.

Prior to joining Berkeley College, Greg served in pastoral leadership for congregations in Massachusetts and New Jersey. In conjunction with his church work, he also produced a local weekly religious radio broadcast that ran successfully for 15 years.

Jason Gulya, PhD

Professor, Applied Media, and AI Consultant

Dr. Jason J. Gulya is an English and Applied Media Professor at Berkeley. He served on the faculty development team for the new program in Applied Media. He earned his PhD from Rutgers University in 2016. He teaches courses in writing, film, AI communication, and social media. He's also a writer, researcher, and consultant. He published his first book, Allegory in Enlightenment Britain: Literary Abominations (Palgrave), in 2022. Additionally, he works as an AI strategist and consultant. He has taught hundreds of students, faculty, and administrators to incorporate Artificial Intelligence into their lives and courses.

Heidi Hoefinger, PhD

Professor, Applied Media

Dr. Heidi Hoefinger is a Social Science and Applied Media Professor at Berkeley. She served on the faculty development team for the new program in Applied Media. She holds a PhD in Media and Communications from Goldsmiths College, University of London, an MA from Hunter College, City University of New York, and a BS from State University of New York, Plattsburgh. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, as well as pieces in periodicals and reports. She has also presented at many conferences and professional events and been extensively featured and interviewed in media coverage.

Julie Porter, PhD

Professor, Applied Media

Dr. Julie Porter is an English and Applied Media Professor at Berkeley.  She served on the faculty development team for the new program in Applied Media. She has over 20 years of teaching experience in writing, communications, and literature, as well as a wide range of practical expertise in various fields. She holds a PhD in English Education from Columbia University, an MFA in Creative Writing from Sarah Lawrence College, an EdM in Learning and Teaching from Harvard Graduate School of Education, an MA in English from Middlebury College, and an AB in English from Princeton University.

Danielle Sonnenberg, PhD

Professor, Applied Media

Dr. Danielle Sonnenberg is a Social Science and Applied Media Professor at Berkeley.  She served on the faculty development team for the new program in Applied Media. She holds a PhD in in Human Development from Fielding Graduate University, an MA/MS from the New School, and a BA from Fordham University.

Professor, Applied Media

Professor Lisa Karakas is an English and Applied Media Professor at Berkeley. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from The State University of New York at Stony Brook and a Master of Science in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from The State University of New York at Albany. She teaches a variety of English courses online and onsite. She joined the Applied Media faculty team to teach courses like Introduction to Communication, AI-Powered Communication, The Confident Speaker, and others.

The Berkeley College Bachelor of Science in Applied Media program offers an innovative and updated curriculum that reflects the state of the professional media world. The program teaches a unique and comprehensive combination of skills that are in demand in an expanding number of industries. The program focuses on three critical aspects—verbal communication, written communication, and visual communication, and also includes a creative focus that incorporates important concepts such as ethical, legal, and political issues, as well as diversity, equity, and inclusion in the field of mass communication.

The College considers students for admission to degree and certificate programs on the basis of future potential, the motivation and interest to succeed in a chosen profession, and past academic achievement.

Graduation from high school or the equivalent is a basic requirement for admission to degree and certificate programs. In evaluating candidates, the Committee on Admissions takes into consideration your individual interests, your motivation to succeed in a chosen profession, and prior academic achievement. Basic requirements for admission include graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent and an entrance exam or SAT/ACT scores. Applicants to the programs offered within the School of Health Studies may have additional requirements. Documentation of successful completion of high school or the equivalent must be submitted to the College prior to starting classes.

A personal interview is strongly recommended. Applicants are encouraged to contact the Director of Admissions at the campus of their choice to arrange for an appointment with an Admissions Associate. Berkeley maintains a rolling admissions policy, so students are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Applicants will be notified of a decision as soon as all credentials have been evaluated. Certain programs may have specific application deadline requirements.
