Combining knowledge and experience in and out of the classroom continue to be the hallmark of teaching and learning at the Berkeley College Larry L. Luing School of Business®.
Faculty Advisor Jonathan Ng, PhD, Assistant Chair, Management, Larry L. Luing School of Business®, and students in the Model U.N. Club at Berkeley College in Woodbridge, NJ, organized a field trip to Manhattan on May 17, 2019, in which 32 students and five Berkeley College faculty participated. The field trip had three components: an in-classroom presentation and discussion, a tour inside the U.N., and a visit to the Singapore Permanent Mission in New York City.
“Many Berkeley College students from our area who are passionate about global issues, and we are preparing them to participate in the national U.N. Conference in New York City next year,” said Dr. Ng.
Participants in Model U.N. conferences are placed on committees and assigned countries, organizations or political figures. They are given portfolios with roles, topics and background guides to discuss. Delegates conduct research and choose positions to debate and, at the end, often are recognized with rewards.
“The U.N. field trip was educational, informative and fun,” said Berkeley College student and U.N. Club President Dheer Patel of South Plainfield, NJ. “It opened our eyes to see and learn what the U.N. is about and how they work with country governments to achieve their Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Another highlight was the opportunity to hear and learn from Jophie Tang, the Deputy Permanent Representative of the Singapore Permanent Mission, about how a small country like Singapore can have an important place in the U.N., despite its size.”
Helen Hall, Accounts Chief, United Nations Development Programme, shared her experience about why she decided to work for the U.N. as well as some benefits and challenges in working and living away from her home country, the United Kingdom..
At a visit to the Singapore Permanent Mission in New York City, Jophie Tang, Deputy Permanent Representative, described her experience working as a diplomat and representing her country in the U.N. The group also participated in an educational guided tour of the U.N.
