STUDENTS FROM BERKELEY COLLEGE AWARDED PRIZES IN
WOODLAND PARK POETRY CONTEST

Anya Curlej of Wallington, NJ (above, left), and Steven Franco of Edison, NJ (right), both Berkeley College students, are award recipients in this year’s Alfred H. Baumann Free Public Library Poetry Contest in the 18-and-older category. Recognizing their talent, Julie Porter, PhD, Professor, English, Berkeley College (center), encouraged both students to enter the contest. Dr. Porter said this year’s contestants presented their poems at a poetry reading on June 16 at Dowling Gardens in Woodland Park, NJ.

Ms. Curlej, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration – Management degree took second place for her poem “A Prayer for the Kind-Hearted Man,” a moving tribute to her husband. In third place, Mr. Franco’s poem, titled “Ode to Coca-Cola,” celebrates the steady presence of his favorite soda in his life. He is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design.

“I’m so happy that Anya and Steven were able to share their work with a larger audience and that their talents were recognized,” Dr. Porter said. “I thank the staff at the library for hosting the poetry contest and for celebrating our students’ achievements.”
