Students from public and private high schools in the New York metropolitan area shared their views and projects addressing the issues they face as they plan their futures, and participated in interactive workshops at 2019 New York Youth Summit hosted by Berkeley College in Midtown Manhattan on April 5, 2019. Moderators included experts in the fields of medicine, the environment, business, fashion, the economy, and leadership. The program concluded with an awards ceremony that recognized students for their efforts and project submissions.
Author and keynote speaker Nir Eyal captured the attention of everyone in the audience as he offered some lessons from his forthcoming book “Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life,” due to be published in September.
“Time management starts with discomfort management,” Mr. Eyal said. “Distractions always start from within.” He explained that internal discomforts distract people and cause us to react by indulging in actions we do not plan, such as spending time on Facebook or shopping on Amazon or eating, for example.
“You cannot call something a distraction unless you know what it is distracting you from … you have to plan your day …We can make time for distraction,” he said.
According to Mr. Eyal, by setting an implementation intention and abiding by what you have set out to do when you have committed to do it, you can spend more time thinking through the problems you are facing.
Following the keynote address, the students heard from faculty and alumni from Berkeley College and professionals from Northwell Health, Mount Sinai St. Luke’s and New York University. The students, who came from high schools across Long Island, worked together to develop solutions for issues including bullying, substance abuse, climate change, and social inequality.
Twenty-four students received awards for their project submissions as part of a research competition.
“The Youth Summit helps students further their engagement with causes that matter to them, and introduces them to a broad group of professionals they can stay connected with as they prepare for college and their future careers,” said Elana Zolfo, EdD, Dean, Berkeley College Larry L. Luing School of Business®, and New York Youth Summit Co-chair.
“The idea of the Summit is to bring talented students together and to expose them to topics that are very important that may not be covered in a high school curriculum,” said Nathalia Rogers, New York Youth Summit Co-chair. “It is the pinnacle of a year-round educational program to address issues that students have researched and developed in preparation for the Summit.”
The lead sponsor of the Summit was Northwell Health. Other partners included Berkeley College, National Grid PLC, Richard Kessel, Southwest Airlines and Vision Long Island.
