The Berkeley College Global Collaborative Program with Guizhou University of Finance and Economics (GUFE) continued its faculty development initiative this summer. Fourteen faculty from GUFE, representing disciplines that ranged from accounting and mathematics to foreign languages, learned with faculty and other professionals at Berkeley College about American pedagogy and teaching methods.

The professors from China were particularly interested in presentations given by Byron Hargrove, PhD, Humanities and Social Sciences, Berkeley College School of Liberal Arts, and Director, Berkeley College Honors Program, and by Diane Georges, Director, Personal Counseling, Berkeley College Student Development and Campus Life. Dr. Hargrove’s presentation “Creative Engagement Strategies in the Classroom,” shared the outcomes from his Human Relations course student team projects. The faculty from China divided into smaller groups arranged by academic discipline to design sample team projects for the courses they teach. Each group presented its ideas to him and the Global Collaborative faculty leader, Heather Klomhaus, PhD, Professor, English, Westchester Community College.

Ms. Georges’ presentation, titled “Teaching the Whole Student: Promoting Social-Emotional Learning in the College Classroom,” was also cited as remarkable by a number of the faculty from China. One professor of mathematics said he was studying the same subject in his research, which prompted more discussion. “They were interested in knowing how to assess emotional competence in their own students and how to maintain professional and traditional boundaries while also promoting social-emotional learning,” Ms. Georges said. The visiting faculty completed brief Emotional Quotient assessments and shared experiences about what they learned.
