Berkeley College Honors student Monserrat “Monse” Miranda was accepted to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) Annual Conference. She gave a poster presentation on December 12 for her paper “Exposing Child Sex Abuse in Catholic Churches.” Miranda is only the second student in the history of the Honors Program to have a paper accepted to the MSCHE Annual Conference.

Miranda, who nearly joined the Marines before choosing to attend Berkeley College, is a Fashion Merchandising and Management student well on her way to her Bachelor's degree. Miranda is the Vice President of the Student Government Association at the Woodland Park campus, helps to run the Fashion Revolution club, and challenges herself to get out of her comfort zone on a daily basis. “Monse sets the bar high for Honors students who may follow in her footsteps. Her passion and attention to detail set her apart from her peers,” said Pattie Cowan, Director of the Honors Program.

Despite being a self-proclaimed introvert, Miranda possesses a great talent for public speaking and has presented at Fall Convocation, hosted a campus-wide Halloween costume contest, and currently works at the front desk helping to answer student questions. Miranda attributes these well-developed skills to the Berkeley staff and curricula, noting the power of her public speaking class, her professors’ constant encouragement to believe in herself and ask questions, and the overall kindred atmosphere of campus.

When searching for colleges, Miranda recounted that the College staff were “looking out for me. I felt like I made a personal connection, and that made the difference.” Miranda expressed similar sentiments regarding connections made with her professors and is grateful for the opportunities Berkeley has provided thus far. “Berkeley is the ‘-est,’” she shared, smiling, noting that a Berkeley College student can add the “-est” suffix to nearly any positive adjective and it would accurately describe the “Berkeley experience.”
