Measles
Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that causes fever and a rash. It is spread by contact with an infected person, through coughing or sneezing. Symptoms typically appear 10 to 12 days after exposure and can include fever, cough, runny nose, wet/watery eyes, spots on the gums and inside of the cheeks, and a rash of red spots on the face that spreads over the entire body.
Signs and symptoms of the measles can include:
- Fever

- Red, watery eyes
- Spots on the gums and inside of cheeks

Influenza (Flu)
The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. Most experts believe that flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. The CDC recommends an annual flu vaccination for everyone six months of age and older. Signs and symptoms of the flu may include:
- Fever or chills
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Muscle or body aches
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Vomiting or diarrhea (more common in children)

Meningitis
Meningitis is a disease caused by the inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. Bacterial meningitis is contagious and spreads through the exchange of respiratory and throat secretions. College students, especially first-year college students living in residence halls, are at a slightly increased risk compared with other persons of the same age.
Signs and symptoms of meningitis may include:
- Fever
- Headache or stiff neck
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Increased sensitivity to light
- Altered mental status (confusion)
