Berkeley College students, faculty, staff and alumni will commemorate the impact of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through activities and community service initiatives in New York, New Jersey and online this month. January 2020 marks the 25th anniversary of MLK Day of Service, an initiative of the federal Corporation for National and Community Service that encourages individuals to embrace Dr. King’s vision of community.

AHRC Food and Clothing Drive – Berkeley College will collect nonperishable food, clothing and personal items for AHRC New York City, an organization that supports those with intellectual or developmental disabilities. A collection box is located on the Lower Level of the 43rd Street Campus, Midtown Manhattan.
January 20, 2020, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
MLK Day of Service with Rescuing Leftover Cuisine – Berkeley College will partner with organizations including Rescuing Leftover Cuisine and Citymeals-on-Wheels to support efforts to combat food insecurity. Students will meet at the 43rd Street campus, Midtown Manhattan, at 9 a.m., and will travel to AHRC New York City, 101 Norfolk Street, New York, NY.

MLK Day of Service at Don Bosco Soup Kitchen – Berkeley College will prepare and serve meals at Don Bosco Soup Kitchen in Port Chester, NY. Students will meet in the Lobby of the White Plains campus at 8 a.m.
January 21, 2020, 12 to 1 p.m. and 5 to 6 p.m.
What’s Your Dream? – Like Martin Luther King Jr., Berkeley College students, faculty and staff will have an opportunity to share their dreams that can impact society. The group will meet in the Atrium, Woodland Park.
January 22, 2020, 10:45 a.m. to 12 p.m.
MLK Day of Service at New Life Adult Day Care – Berkeley College will visit New Life Adult Day Care in Paramus to play games and interact with elderly patrons. Students will meet in the Paramus Student Center at 10:45 a.m.
January 23, 2020, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Making Sandwiches for the Homeless – Berkeley College will make sandwiches to distribute to the homeless community near Penn Station in Newark. Students will meet in the Woodbridge Student Center.

Distributing Blankets and Sandwiches with Be the Change – Berkeley College will distribute warm blankets and sandwiches to the homeless community near Penn Station in Newark, in conjunction with Be the Change. Students should contact Sandra Garcia for departure time from the Newark campus.

Blanket Drive – Berkeley College will collect warm blankets at the Newark and Woodbridge campuses that will be distributed to the homeless at Newark Penn Station.

MLK Day of Service at Father English Center – Berkeley College will serve those in need at the Father English Community Center in Paterson, NJ. The group will meet in the Atrium, Woodland Park, at 9:30 a.m.

Free Movie Tickets to “Just Mercy” – Through the generosity of the African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey, 100 movie tickets are available to a screening of “Just Mercy.” The movie features Michael B. Jordan as Bryan Stevenson, a Harvard lawyer who moves to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or who cannot afford proper representation. First priority will be given to students, but faculty, staff and alumni are also invited to attend. Transportation will be provided to Jersey Gardens in Elizabeth.

Movie Night: “Selma” – The Berkeley College Online Film Club will screen “Selma,” a chronicle of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s civil rights campaign. The movie will be accessible to the virtual community through LibGuides.
