Smith, President of Berkeley College, was recognized by City & State as one of New York’s 50 Over 50 most influential leaders during an event held at Prince George Ballroom in Manhattan, on Monday, January 27, 2020. More than 500 guests attended the “50 Over 50 Age Disrupters Awards Reception,” presented by City & State and AARP. The event paid a special tribute to 10 Lifetime Achievement award winners, including former New York Governor David Paterson and H. Carl McCall, Former New York State Comptroller and SUNY Chairman. “It would be a mistake not to acknowledge that today’s buzzy young stars are standing on the shoulders of giants – the leaders who broke barriers, set the stage and made our city and state the greatest in America,” said Tom Allon, President and Publisher of City & State, in the publication’s “50 Over 50” issue. “I am honored to accept this award and thank City & State for recognizing us as leaders in our respective fields,” said President Smith. “This reminds us that progress is accelerated by disruption.” Mr. Smith was named president of Berkeley College in 2015. He has served the institution in various roles for nearly 25 years. President Smith embodies Berkeley College’s chief principle, “The Student Always Comes First,” with his emphasis on student lifelong success. His hallmark is accessibility to students. He regularly hosts conversations to take the pulse of the student community and to directly address students’ needs and potential obstacles to graduation. During his tenure, Berkeley College was named a top institution for income mobility by Opportunity Insights, a non-partisan, nonprofit organization based at Harvard University (formerly known as The Equality of Opportunity Project). Opportunity Insights ranked Berkeley College New York in the top 1 percent of 2,137 colleges across the nation for overall income mobility, at No. 21. In 2020, Berkeley also moved up in U.S. News & World Report’s rankings as a Best College for Online Bachelor’s Degrees and Best College for Online Degree Programs for Veterans (distinctions the College has earned for seven consecutive years).
