The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) recently recognized the work of three Berkeley College students who were named semi-finalists in its Student Portfolio Competition. The national competition evaluates submissions on conceptual thought, content and record of achievement.
Students Reem Beck, Kelly Morse and Zulal Karadavut are pursuing Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in Interior Design at Berkeley College and are expected to graduate later this year.
About Reem Beck
Reem Beck, 30, works as a Drafter/Designer with Baseline Architecture, PC, in Parsippany, NJ. Her interests lie in the green building movement and in sustainable design practices, particularly biophilic design, which connects occupants closely to nature. Ms. Beck also was recognized in 2019 for her furniture design in the ASID Samuel and Rhoda Chalfin Memorial Student Design Competition. She is a resident of Woodland Park, NJ, where she is lending design expertise to the Alfred H. Baumann Free Public Library on its expansion and renovation project.
About Kelly Morse
Kelly Morse, 20, is currently completing an internship with Jennifer McGee Design in Ridgewood, NJ, and hopes to one day open her own design firm. “My primary design interests include high-end residential work, as well as sustainable design,” she said. “I like to infuse nature into my projects because it is something I feel many people do not have the opportunity to enjoy anymore.” Ms. Morse is a resident of Vernon, NJ, and a graduate of Vernon Township High School.
About Zulal Karadavut
Zulal Karadavut, 25, works as an Assistant Designer with Interior Decisions Inc. in Florham Park, NJ. She appreciates the real-world experience she has garnered by working in the design field, and said each element of design presents different opportunities. “I like working on residential projects, but I believe commercial and hospitality projects have their own beauty,” Ms. Karadavut said. “I want to improve myself in every part of designing. For a long-term career, I want to work with an architectural firm to see the construction side of design.” She likes to utilize geometric shapes and open-concept designs. Ms. Karadavut is a resident of Paterson, NJ.
