HIGH SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY LEADERS TO A PUBLIC HEALTH FORUM
ON THE CORONAVIRUS ON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2020, AT 12:30 PM

Westchester County Health Commissioner and White Plains Public Safety Commissioner to Address Public Concerns About the Coronavirus

Berkeley College will host a public health forum on the coronavirus on Thursday, February 6, 2020, at 12:30 p.m. at its White Plains campus, 99 Church Street. The program is open to all local, county and state officials, community leaders, educators, and public health representatives in Westchester County. 

Sherlita Amler, MD, will speak about “Coronavirus Response and Preparedness in Westchester County.” Dr. Amler has devoted her life to public service for more than three decades. In 2011, was appointed Commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Health. While leading the Department, she served as acting commissioner in the Department of Community Mental Health. Dr. Amler was Putnam County’s first Commissioner of Health from 2004 through 2011. 

David E. Chong, Commissioner of Public Safety for the City of White Plains, will discuss “How to Address Public Concerns and Overreactions Pertaining to the Coronavirus Outbreak.” A 30-year veteran of law enforcement and decorated officer during his longtime career at the New York City Police Department (NYPD), Commissioner Chong oversees all City Police, Fire, Emergency Management Services and 911 emergency services for the City of White Plains. He is a widely decorated officer who has been recognized for his contributions, including a Lifetime Achievement Award by The New York City Police Department Asian Jade Society and the Organization of Chinese Americans.

Mr. Chong has served as Commissioner since 2010, following his retirement as Lieutenant Commander of Detectives from the NYPD. He served the NYPD for 22 years. 

Michael Blecker, Deputy Chief and Assistant Director of Operations for Empress Emergency Medical Services, based in Yonkers, will speak about “How to Prevent the Spread of the Virus and Minimize Exposure, and What to do if Symptoms Occur.” Mr. Blecker has been involved with Emergency Medical Services since 2000 working in New York City, Westchester County and Suffolk County. Mr. Blecker has worked with hospitals in the New York metropolitan region, including St. Luke’s – Roosevelt Hospital Center and New York Presbyterian. He was officially deployed as a volunteer responder to Ground Zero on September 11, 2001.

ABOUT THE CORONAVIRUS: The coronavirus is a novel virus that originated in Wuhan, China. It has resulted in thousands of confirmed cases in China, including cases outside Wuhan City. Additional cases have been identified in a number of other countries, including the United States. Signs and symptoms of this illness include fever, cough, and difficulty breathing. This form of the coronavirus has the potential to cause severe disease and death.
