Berkeley College is accepting applications for enrollment in a new Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree Program in Business Data Science, with concentrations in Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Business Analytics. The degree program, scheduled to begin in Fall 2020, will prepare undergraduate students for careers in growth industries in the innovation economy through a robust curriculum that is at the interface of business and emerging technology. “This is one of the few business data science programs of its kind offered at the undergraduate level, which opens a range of possibilities for students,” said Michael J. Smith, President of Berkeley College. “The introduction of this business data science program also builds on Berkeley College’s strength as a career-focused institution specializing in business, professional and healthcare fields that meet industry demands,” said President Smith. “The Business Data Science Program is relevant to students who want to develop a dynamic set of skills that set them apart in the innovation economy,” said Marsha Pollard, PhD, Provost of Berkeley College. “It combines a range of skills that include analyzing large amounts of data, data mining and programming skills. We expect a healthy demand for the program based on the significant career opportunities and higher salaries offered in data analytics and AI across many business, government and nonprofit sectors,” said Dr. Pollard. For example, said Dr. Pollard, the concentration in business analytics will prepare students for careers such as a business intelligence developer, management/business analyst, information systems analyst, operation research analyst, and computer information systems analyst. The concentration in artificial intelligence will prepare students for careers such as data scientist, machine learning engineer, statistician/mathematician and software/application developer. The projected job growth for careers within the business data science/AI fields significantly outpaces the average job growth for most professions in New York State, the State of New Jersey, and nationally. This degree will also serve as a platform for students who may wish to seek admission into related graduate-level studies. This degree program, available fully online and at Berkeley College’s Woodland Park Campus, will blend technology, data science and artificial intelligence with mathematics, data visualization and analytics, while maintaining a foundational business core. The curriculum will also focus on ethics, science, creativity, social and communication skills. Admission into the Business Data Science program is competitive. This program is relevant for college-bound high school seniors, community college graduates, and working professionals who would like to advance in their respective fields or enter a new field. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, careers as statisticians, software or application developers and research or business analysts are predicted to grow by up to 30 percent – much faster than average, through 2028. Trained specialists also will be in demand to leverage emerging technologies in areas including blockchain, robotics and big data. Operational research analysts, who handle complex analytical duties as a result of advances in technology, are listed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics among its top 30 fastest growing occupations to 2026.
