Ana Yee, Director, Berkeley College Alumni Career Services and Quality Control, recently was recognized by Volunteer New York with a Volunteer Spirit Award for her work in the White Plains community. The Volunteer Spirit Awards were presented virtually on April 9, 2020. Yee, a resident of White Plains, NY, received the award in the Quality of Life category for her years of volunteerism with Gilda’s Club Westchester and the White Plains Youth Bureau.
“Right now, our region, our state, our country, our world needs this event. We need to come together to embrace the powerful good that volunteers add,” Alisa Kesten, Executive Director, Volunteer New York, told the virtual audience, acknowledging that April is Global Volunteer Month.
Yee said her father, a diplomat from El Salvador, taught her the importance of community, and inspired her to give back. For nearly a decade, she has served as a volunteer at Gilda’s Club Westchester, a community for cancer support. Yee also shares her passion for helping young people with the White Plains Youth Bureau, where she organizes the donations of Thanksgiving meals and holiday gifts for families in need.
In her 33 years at Berkeley College, Yee has placed thousands of students in internships and careers – including more than 100 interns and 10 graduates in jobs with Gilda’s Club and the White Plains Youth Bureau. Frank Williams, Executive Director of the White Plains Youth Bureau, called her “a servant leader.”
“I am truly honored to receive this award. Volunteering was something that was expected when I was growing up – part of the fabric of our family,” Yee said. “We are definitely living in uncertain times now, and volunteering can make a positive difference for others and ourselves. Small actions can be so powerful. I challenge you – leave a lasting positive touch for another person. Find a way to reach out –now more than ever.”
