Gary Krulish, Chair, Justice Studies and National Security programs, Berkeley College School of Professional Studies, joined top officials from the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and Secure Worker Access Consortium (SWAC) to discuss the state of national security post-9/11 and public/private partnerships at the City & State Protecting New York Summit on July 22, 2021.

The virtual symposium was attended by more than 150 people and gathered industry executives, public sector leaders and academics. An opening keynote by Benjamin Tucker, First Deputy Commissioner, New York City Police Department, was followed by panel discussions on safeguarding against terrorist attacks and emergencies, public safety and information security.

On the panel titled “Protecting New York’s Infrastructure,” Krulish was featured alongside Patrick A. Murphy, Commissioner, New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services; Patrick Warren, Chief Safety and Security Officer, MTA; Roger L. Parrino Sr., Senior Advisor, Security and Emergency Management, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey; and Daniel Krantz, Managing Partner, SWAC. Moderator Annie McDonough, Tech and Policy Reporter, City & State, asked panelists to reflect on ways to strengthen New York’s collective response to emerging threats, including opportunities for collaboration between government agencies and private enterprises.

“The City & State panel brought home the message that everyone plays a role in protecting New York’s infrastructure and our communities,” said Krulish. “Public/private partnerships should become as recognizable as the phrase, ‘See something, say something.’”

Added Krantz, “Everybody needs to work together to manage the threat versus trying to take it on through their own individual agencies.”

Krulish also emphasized the role of higher education in preparing the future workforce for national security and emergency response careers.

“It’s important that individuals who get a degree are not only prepared academically, but that they also know what it’s going to be like moving into these agencies,” said Krulish. “As the role of National Security positions change and the threats are constantly evolving, students are going to have to hit the ground running.”
