City & State New York recognized Marsha A. Pollard, PhD, Berkeley College Provost, alongside the most powerful women in business, government, advocacy, media and business during its Power of Diversity: Women’s 100 awards, held virtually on Wednesday, November 10, 2021.
Honorees included New York Governor Kathy Hochul, New York State Attorney General Letitia James, State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Rebecca C. Lewis, Deputy State Politics Reporter at City & State and emcee of the virtual ceremony, said the event recognized a “year of firsts,” including Hochul as the State’s first female governor. “This is a momentous year and a great time for us to be celebrating all of the women on our list,” Lewis said.
During the ceremony, speakers and honorees U.S. Congresswomen Yvette Clarke (9th District of New York) and Carolyn Maloney (12th District of New York), and Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn (Assembly District 42), spoke about the importance of diversity and representation at all levels of government.
“The power of diversity is a real superpower,” said Congresswoman Clarke. “It’s time we collectively harness this power of goodwill to bring about the change we all want to see and be a part of.”
About Dr. Marsha A. Pollard
Dr. Pollard has nearly two decades of leadership experience in higher education, and has served as provost at Berkeley College since 2018.
Under Dr. Pollard’s leadership, Berkeley College ensured academic continuity at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic for students, faculty and staff. In March 2020, more than 1,500 courses were transitioned to an online modality, and the College sponsored professional development to assist professors in quickly adapting to the virtual classroom.
As the College’s Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Pollard has diversified Berkeley College’s degree and certificate program offerings with an emphasis on high-demand fields, and has expanded Berkeley College’s continuing education initiatives by focusing on affordable, stackable credentials. Her collaborative approach, emphasis on faculty development, and implementation of flexible instructional methodologies that support student-centered learning, are among the factors that make her a standout leader at Berkeley College.
