Berkeley College Knights Men's Basketball Team Wins Seventh Consecutive HVIAC Championship

The Berkeley College Men’s Basketball team secured its seventh consecutive Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) Tournament victory on Sunday, February 27, 2022, defeating Word of Life Bible Institute (Pottersville, NY), 89-79. The victory marked the team’s 13th HVIAC Championship win since 2006. This year’s Tournament was hosted by Five Towns College in Dix Hills, NY.
The Knights were led by Dontel Henry of the Bronx, NY, a graduate of Brooklyn Collegiate, who scored 29 points. Henry averaged 25 points on 50 percent shooting for the weekend and was named the Tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Knights guard Kenny Pitt of Brooklyn, NY, a graduate of Bushwick Leaders High School, added 17 points and five rebounds in the final.

In the semifinals on Saturday, February 26, the No. 1-seeded Berkeley College Knights defeated The Kings College (Manhattan, NY), the No. 4 seed, by a score of 107-92. Word of Life Bible Institute defeated the No. 3 seed, Five Towns College, by a score of 71-59, in the semifinals.
With the Tournament win, the Knights receive an automatic bid to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Division II National Championship, to be held March 6 to 10, 2022, at Virginia State University in Richmond, VA.
HVIAC Women’s Basketball Championship
The No. 2-seeded Berkeley College Women’s Basketball team fell to No. 1 seed Five Towns College in the HVIAC Women’s Basketball Championship game, 58-56. With the team’s first HVIAC Championship win, Five Towns College receives an at-large bid to the USCAA Division II National Championship.
Cierra Highland of Brooklyn, NY, a graduate of Bedford Academy High School, led the Knights in the hard-fought game, scoring 20 points and grabbing eight rebounds, six steals and two assists. Amal Mahmoud of Brooklyn, NY, a graduate of Bedford Stuyvesant Preparatory, recorded an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double.
