Berkeley College Legal Studies Professor Says Compliance in the Era of COVID-19 Requires a Humanistic Approach

Berkeley College joined the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, March 3, 2022, to present “A Second Look: Compliance in the Era of COVID-19,” part of the Learning Tracks for Business Success webinar series to assist businesses during New York City’s economic recovery.
Traci Dingle, JD, PhD, Professor, Justice Studies and Legal Studies, Berkeley College School of Professional Studies, spoke about the need for businesses to reevaluate their policies and procedures with a humanistic approach, following the health and social justice challenges of recent years.
“Yes, we have policies, procedures, guidelines and regulations we have to follow,” Dingle said. “But in addition to following these, it is time to add a humanistic approach, post-COVID.”
Dingle encouraged business leaders to reexamine their companies’ workplace health and safety, employee codes of conduct, and equal opportunity policies, and emphasized the importance of buy-in from employees at all levels.
“Your company has to define what the workplace and safety look like for you,” she said. “Every business has a different culture, so everyone is not going to have the same definition or the same outlook.”
She added, “The response from your employees is very important. You want to make sure they understand what the policies are, and you want them to feel that they had a part in updating those policies. In order to do that, you have to make them part of the conversation.”
