Cowan Commencement 

Pattie Cowan is a Professor in the English Department, Division of General Education. She joined Berkeley College in 2013, and has more than 25 years of experience teaching at the college level. 

Cowan teaches English and Humanities courses, and is also a professor in the Honors Program. She developed a course titled “Monsters in the Media,” which explores the evolution of some of the most well-known “monsters,” including vampires, zombies, aliens, and even the human being. 

Cowan serves on the Berkeley College Community Service Week Planning Committee, where she spearheads a knitting and crocheting initiative that donates baby hats and blankets to local hospitals. 

Cowan has received numerous awards from Berkeley College including the Be Exceptional Award (2021); Honors Faculty Appreciation Award (2018); National Society of Leadership and Success – Excellence in Teaching Award (2018); Associate of the Year Award for Excellence – Honorable Mention (2018); Master Faculty Recognition Award (2017); and President’s Award for Making a Difference (2017). 

She holds a Master of Arts in English, with a concentration in Writing, and a Bachelor of Arts in English, both from William Paterson University. 

Cowan’s favorite Berkeley College memory is the 2018 Honors Symposium, which marked her first time teaching an Honors cohort from its first day of classes through completion of the program. Her advice to graduates is: “Aim high. Challenge yourselves. Never stop learning.”
