Berkeley College Fashion Merchandising and Management students joined students from New York City language school Rennert International to learn about the impact of fashion and design waste management during a recent field trip to FABSCRAP in Brooklyn, NY. Nonprofit FABSCRAP seeks to end commercial textile waste and maximize the value of unused fabric through a pickup and recycling service.

The students sorted through excess samples and fabric from brands including American Eagle and Steve Madden.

According to FABSCRAP, New York City residents dispose of 200,000 tons of clothing, shoes, accessories, and linens each year. Designers who embrace sustainability often find it difficult due to a lack of recycling infrastructure, the organization said.

“Our Berkeley College students are always excited to be part of the environmentally responsible future of fashion,” said Andrea Kennedy, Lead Faculty, Fashion Merchandising and Management, Berkeley College Larry L. Luing School of Business®. “The fabric they sorted was design-room excess saved from the New York City waste stream and will now be upcycled, downcycled, and remain in use. It was a wonderful day of community building and community service.”

Stefhanie Jimenez, a Fashion Merchandising and Management student from Brooklyn, NY, called her experience at FABSCRAP “a fashion journey that I would be happy to repeat.”

“I was amazed at the amount of fabric, unfinished garments, and swatches that had been recycled,” said Jimenez, who wants to learn about every aspect of the fashion industry. “Caring about our resources and where they come from is important, especially as a creator or designer. Having a sustainable state of mind encourages and inspires others.”
