Apply for your dream job. That was one piece of advice offered by Berkeley College alumna Corrin Martin, who visited Berkeley College in Woodland Park, NJ, for an Alumni Spotlight event titled “From Berkeley College to Career Success: Alumni Insights and Experiences” on Tuesday, April 30, 2024. Martin, a 2015 graduate from Belvidere, NJ, serves as Coordinator of Corporate Partnerships for Operations and Events for the New York Giants.
“Rejection is good,” Martin told aspiring professionals in the audience. “You’re going to learn so much from that ‘no’ and you’re eventually going to get to that ‘yes.’ Then it’s going to be all open doors.”
She encouraged students and alumni to “shoot your shot” – even if you don’t feel you are qualified for a position.
“Send out that resume. Apply for that job,” she said. “I went on a lot of interviews, but looking back, I’m so glad that I did. It shook me out of my shell and got me comfortable with answering those difficult questions.”
Martin, who holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Berkeley College, didn’t always envision herself working in the professional sports field. She considered careers as a teacher and chef before she was hired with the Giants organization as a Human Resources Coordinator in 2019.
“From here on out, this is my vision,” Martin said. “I don’t want to be anywhere else. I want to stay with my team.”
She added, “I’m soaking up as much as I can and learning as much as I can. I love getting into new things and taking on new responsibilities – I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
Martin encouraged current students to “jump right in” on campus and utilize academic resources, such as tutoring through the Center for Academic Success.
“I never take my experience at Berkeley College for granted,” Martin said. “I feel like it molded me for all of the jobs I have had.”
Ronald Subia, Career Counselor, Career Services, who interviewed Martin for the program, called her Berkeley College’s “No. 1 pick” for her continued connection to the Berkeley College community.
“As alumni, we are here to help,” Martin said. “We are here to share what we have been through – how we made it through and how we got to where we are today.”
