“One of the biggest takeaways is that you are not alone. There are resources. You get to choose your present and your future. Your past does not define who you are or how your life is going to unfold.” – Nancy Robles, Berkeley College alumna and author

“Brave.” That is the word Berkeley College alumna and author Nancy Robles uses to describe her journey to healing.
Robles hosted a reading and discussion of her book, “The Many Pieces of Me,” at Berkeley College in New York City on Tuesday, May 28, 2024. The event was held during National Mental Health Awareness Month.
“When you are a survivor of any kind of adversity there is so much shame, which logically does not make sense because it isn’t your fault,” Robles told the audience. “Part of the healing process is putting the shame where it belongs.”
Robles said her book, which details her experiences with generational trauma as well as physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, was not intended to be public and was written as part of her therapy. She hopes her narrative will help others find the strength to make changes in their lives.
“I think one of the biggest takeaways is that you are not alone. There are resources. And you can make changes in your life,” Robles said. “You get to choose your present and your future. Your past does not define who you are or you’re your life is going to unfold.”
Robles serves as President of Eastern Funding LLC.

Robles also said her story is a testament to the strength and confidence that education provides. She holds two degrees from Berkeley College, as well as a Master of Business Administration degree. She was named Berkeley College’s 2017 Alumna of the Year and sits on the Board of the Berkeley College Foundation.
“To have people validate me and tell me I was smart and my opinion mattered – that shaped so much of who I am today,” she said of her time at Berkeley College.
Coming Up: Berkeley College will host a second author event with Nancy Robles on Thursday, June 6, at its campus in Woodland Park, NJ. Click here for more information and to register.
“With more than 68,000 alumni worldwide, Berkeley College is always honored to welcome them back to campus to share their life journeys with the community,” said Michael Iris, EdD, Associate Vice President, Alumni Relations and Career Services, Berkeley College, who opened the event. “Nancy is a phenomenal alumna whose significant story and active contributions to Berkeley College and our students inspire us all.”
“The value of Nancy’s message was strong,” said Linda Mauro, Campus Operating Officer, Berkeley College in New York City, who moderated a question-and-answer session following Robles’ reading. “Nancy persisted through such adversity and challenges yet continued to stay strong for her children and herself. Her book is a must read for anyone who thinks they do not have the strength to go on.”
