Jessica Carchi of Hackensack, NJ, received the DAISY Award at Berkeley College’s nurse pinning ceremony in Woodland Park, NJ, on April 18, 2025. Carchi earned the award for exceptional treatment and compassion for both her patients and peers during her time as a Practical Nurse (PN) student at Berkeley College.

Debora La Torre, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, Professor, Nursing, Berkeley College School of Health Studies, presented the DAISY Award to Carchi. “Jessica is a prime example of grit and dedication during her school journey,” she said. “Her dedication to excel has continued to shine as she supported the rest of the class on their journey. She has overcome various obstacles throughout this program, making her an aspiring role model for future PNs – all while having a newborn baby.”

The DAISY Award was created in 1999 in memory of J. Patrick Barnes to acknowledge the care, support, and empathy shown by his nurses.

Carchi is employed as a Surgical Coordinator at Englewood Spine Associates and plans to continue her education by becoming a registered nurse in the future. She hopes to earn a Doctor of Nursing Practice. Carchi credits her inspiration to her daughter. “What I am able to accomplish in my lifetime can set a good standard for her to follow her dreams no matter the circumstance,” Carchi said.

A first-generation college graduate, Carchi’s parents emigrated from Ecuador and gave everything they had to give her and her family a good life and a plethora of opportunities. “I appreciate their hard work and hope I make them proud,” Carchi said.

Carchi thanked her professors for instilling grit and discipline in her and her cohort. “These professors were able to give us a good foundation,” she said. “Their lessons have helped me evolve into a better daughter, mother, friend, and nurse.”

To future Berkeley College students, Carchi offers the following advice: “Stay focused, be disciplined, and do not give up no matter how hard it gets. Get up and keep going. The finish line is a great reward.”
