Extraordinary Moments of Fatherhood Revealed in Father's Day Book Gifts and Reading Selections Promoted by Berkeley College Faculty and Librarians

Berkeley College Library Services promotes reading and connects readers to books that inspire, guide, comfort, or provide a sense of belonging. “Books have that sort of power,” said Marlene Doty, Berkeley College Vice President, Library Services “During the month of June, the Library catalog features a collection of books that highlight the art of fatherhood, its cultural history, as well as the challenges and celebration of fathers. You can find the selections here, by opening the tab on Fatherhood. For example, in the book “Pops: Fatherhood in Pieces,” Michael Chabon tries to capture those moments that make fatherhood so extraordinary. Memoirs by an athlete, a former President, an entrepreneur, and a former U.S. Senator, are included in the Fatherhood-featured books.
According to Professor Richard Schultz, PhD, Co-Chair, English, Berkeley College School of Liberal Arts, the books selected here are excellent choices for a Father’s Day – to read or as a gift – in that they represent a wide selection of genres, from personal memoir, to cultural history, to poetry. They also represent a variety of points of view: those of sons, daughters, and, of course, the fathers themselves.
“I think that the most important lesson readers can pull from these works is that fatherhood is complicated, often messy, and that there are no comprehensive rules for fathers,” Dr. Schultz said. “What I particularly like about the selections is that there aren’t any simplistic ‘how-to’ manuals or guidebooks listed here, and the fathers represented are portrayed with both their positive characteristics and frailties intact.”
