MEET THE WINNERS: BERKELEY COLLEGE STUDENTS AWARDED
TOP PRIZES IN WOODLAND PARK POETRY CONTEST

 Students show Poetry Contest certificates.

Joseph Pugliese of Totowa (left, above), Berkeley College alumnus, and Lili Pacheco of Clifton, Berkeley College student (right), are the second and first place prize award recipients in this year’s Alfred H. Baumann Free Public Library Poetry Contest in the 18-and-older category. Julie Porter, PhD, Professor, English, Berkeley College School of Liberal Arts (center), immediately thought of her former creative writing students, when the contest was announced. “I am so glad that their talent was recognized,” Dr. Porter said. Residents of Woodland Park, students of Passaic Valley High School and Berkeley College are welcome to submit their poems for this contest, which is held annually by the Alfred H. Baumann Free Public Library in Woodland Park, NJ.  This year’s winners presented their winning poems at a poetry reading on June 12, 2019.

Ms. Pacheco is earning a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Fashion Merchandising and Management at Berkeley College. “In my poem, I comment about life and just trying to be present in the moment,” she said. “I’m so glad it was well received.”

Mr. Pugliese took a different approach. His poem, “Ode to Stuffing,” was about his love of Thanksgiving stuffing. At the reading, his recitation made everyone in the room laugh. An Honors scholar, Mr. Pugliese graduated summa cum laude in May 2019 with a Bachelor of Science degree in National Security.
