Statue Honors Berkeley College Chairman Emeritus Larry L. Luing

Berkeley College unveiled a bronze statue of Larry L. Luing, Berkeley College Chairman Emeritus, during a dedication ceremony at the campus in Woodland Park, NJ, on June 14, 2019. The more than 6-foot statue, commissioned from artists Gillie and Marc, recognizes the vision and leadership of Mr. Luing, and his dedication to the principle that “The Student Always Comes First.” The statue was presented to the College as a gift from Mr. Luing’s sons, Kevin, Randy, Tim and Brian Luing.
Tim Luing, Executive Vice President, Berkeley College, spoke of Mr. Luing’s passion for business and his family’s love of education.
“My father was a visionary. He always looked to the future to guide his path,” Tim Luing said. “He believed that Berkeley’s greatest strength was its people. Many of us today talk about his message that students come first. It is central to our mission, vision and values.”

Larry L. Luing grew up in rural Iowa. After graduating from the University of Iowa and serving in the U.S. Army in Korea, he enjoyed a successful career in publishing, working for the Gregg Division of the McGraw-Hill Book Company, where he sold textbooks to business schools around the country.
In 1965, Mr. Luing became part owner and Vice President of Administration of The Berkeley School. His leadership sparked a 35-year period of unprecedented growth and the institution’s transformation from a secretarial school to an accredited, degree-granting college that offers certificates, Associate’s, Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Mr. Luing passed away in November 2016.

“Larry’s vision has flourished into a world-class college,” said Linda Herinya Jones, who served as Mr. Luing’s assistant for more than 25 years. “Larry gave much of his life to improve education, and particularly to developing Berkeley College. He was very proud of his sons, who continue to further Berkeley’s mission today.”
Michael J. Smith, President of Berkeley College, recalled Mr. Luing’s strength as an architect of the future, whose vision of education offered greater access and flexibility to all students.
“You can see Larry Luing’s fingerprints all over Berkeley College,” President Smith said. “He was a visionary in how a school was run and how things should be. Nothing was impossible.”
Kevin L. Luing, Board Chairman, said he hopes the statue, located outside Berkeley College’s Welcome Center, will become a symbol of the College that will spark new traditions for students as they walk on campus.
“I can’t think of anyone we associate with Berkeley College more than my father,” said Kevin Luing. “This statue will be a reminder of Larry Luing and Berkeley College’s past, present and future, where the student always comes first.”

“Larry L. Luing implemented practices and procedures that put students first and have helped them succeed through teaching and learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom,” the proclamation reads.
The grounds and landscaping around the statue were designed by Alfonso Torino, Chair, and Jason Lee, Professor, Interior Design, in the Berkeley College School of Professional Studies. The statue was created by Australian artists Gillie and Marc, whom The New York Times called “the most successful and prolific creators of public art in New York’s history.” The artists have works on display in more than 250 cities worldwide.
