“Empowered women empower women.” That was the theme of “Empowered Leadership,” a women’s business leadership conference hosted by Eastern Funding, LLC, and co-sponsored by Berkeley College and Brookline Bank on November 13, 2019, at the Renaissance New York Midtown Hotel in Manhattan, NY. Seventy participants attended the conference, which focused on pay equity, self-care and leadership.

Syleecia Thompson, DBA, an entertainment agent, author, brand strategist and Professor, Management, Berkeley College Larry L. Luing School of Business®, delivered the keynote address, encouraging women to celebrate short wins, be resilient, and empower themselves by empowering others.

“If someone knows your story, you can change that person’s life,” Dr. Thompson said. “Empowerment is about setting intentions, staying focused and practicing determination.”

Nancy Robles-Guess, Executive Vice President, Operations and Compliance Officer for Eastern Funding, spoke about preparing future generations of women leaders.

“I feel a sense of responsibility to mentor other women and to give back to my community,” Ms. Robles-Guess said. She speaks with students at her alma mater, Berkeley College, where she was named the 2017 Alumna of the Year. “Every woman that we help, we are helping an entire community,” she added.

Other panelists discussed the importance of lifting up other women in the workplace, and of speaking up when necessary.

“It’s about recognizing that you have a voice, and using that voice,” said Maura Regan, President, LIMA, International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association.

“Put your hand up,” added Amanda Cain, Managing Director, Commodities, SG Americas Securities. “You’ve earned your seat at the table.”

Other panelists and speakers included Alicia R. Alston, Vice President, Global Communications, Prudential Financial; Janytra Brooks, Vice President, Human Resources, Brookline Bank; Adebola Dele-Michael, Board-Certified Dermatologist; Karinna Gonzalez, Health Educator;  and Sherry Kundlas Aeri, Vice President, Wholesale Credit Technology, Global Banking and Markets, Bank of America.
