More than 90 Berkeley College Honors students presented research on topics in social justice and their respective careers during a virtual research symposium held from August 2 through 5, 2021. Through the symposium experience, students hone their professional presentation, critical thinking and academic writing skills.

“I am always proud of the dedication shown by our Honors students who are passionate when talking about the important social issues of today,” said Byron Hargrove, PhD, Director of the Berkeley College Honors Program. “With support from our Honors faculty, librarians and Berkeley College writing consultants, we continue to help our Honors students develop their critical thinking, information literacy, research, writing and public speaking abilities – skills that will be important in their future careers. Even in a pandemic, our students and faculty were able to successfully pivot to the virtual symposium and online classes during the year.”

Michael J. Smith, President of Berkeley College, also praised the students. “The Honors Symposium is one of the highlights of the year at Berkeley College,” he said. “Our students showcase their passions and interests through dynamic research presentations and put to use skills that will advance them in pursuit of their professional goals.”

Other research topics included the misuse of social media, improving jail conditions, educational disparity in the classroom, unethical animal treatment, sexual harassment in the workplace, the dilemma of undocumented immigrants, and the mental effects of COVID-19.

An Honors Superlative Ceremony was held on August 6, 2021, with 35 students, faculty and staff in attendance. Panagiota Babadelis of West New York, NJ, a recent graduate, and first-year student Cadjnie Cameau of Brooklyn, NY, were both honored with the Honors Service Excellence Award. The ceremony was designed to recognize the scholars who earned special superlatives during the year (fall to spring) and at the 2021 spring Symposium.

About the Berkeley College Honors Program
The Honors Program is a rigorous educational opportunity offered to a learning community of high-achieving students. Honors students are exposed to theme-based interdisciplinary seminars, enhance their research writing and oral presentation skills, and provide community service to the College and community. Themes reflect topics that are timely and relevant and change each year. Senior faculty teams lead these students, based on their subject expertise, their ability to engage students in sustained discussions, and their use of innovative teaching methods and technology.
