The Commerce and Industry Association of New Jersey (CIANJ), in partnership with COMMERCE magazine, recognized Berkeley College among the companies doing the most good for their communities at its 2022 Companies that Care Awards Reception on March 23, 2022, at Nanina’s in the Park in Belleville, NJ. CIANJ honored the College with two bronze awards in the categories of “COVID-19 Community Response and Support” and “Feeding the Hungry.”

“Berkeley College is honored to be recognized by CIANJ among the outstanding organizations that stepped up to serve New Jersey communities in need,” said Diane Recinos, EdD, President of Berkeley College. “We especially applaud our student healthcare workers who shared their professional expertise so selflessly, both at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and in the months of recovery that followed.”

“Giving back and helping those in need is a part of the culture for all of the companies and organizations we are honoring,” said Anthony Russo, President of CIANJ. “We are glad that we can showcase all of their good works and honor them for their commitment to service even through the last two years while dealing with the global pandemic.”

Forty-four companies, including manufacturers, retailers, hospitals, banks and colleges and universities, were honored by CIANJ.

COVID-19 Community Response and Support

Berkeley College School of Health Studies Volunteers Administer COVID-19 Vaccinations

Faculty and students from the Berkeley College School of Health Studies served as frontline volunteers administering COVID-19 vaccines in collaboration with the City of Clifton, NJ, Health Department in 2021. More than 10,000 vaccinations were administered at the drive-thru site at Clifton High School.

“The collaboration with the City of Clifton’s Health Department helps Berkeley College’s nursing and allied health students develop as compassionate, well-rounded healthcare professionals,” said Eva Skuka, MD, PhD, Dean, Berkeley College School of Health Studies.

“It’s been a great working relationship,” said John Biegel, Health Officer and Director of Human Services, City of Clifton, NJ.

Feeding the Hungry

Berkeley College Student Food Pantry in Newark, NJ, Fights Food Insecurity

In collaboration with the Community FoodBank of New Jersey and a $10,000 donation from the Berkeley College Foundation, the Berkeley College Food Pantry in Newark, NJ, stepped up efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic to continue addressing food insecurity among students. At the time of its opening in 2019, the Berkeley College Food Pantry was one of 20 colleges offering food pantries on campus in New Jersey. Based on the success of the Newark pantry, an additional food pantry was established at Berkeley College in Midtown Manhattan in 2021.
