The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) recently recognized Berkeley College student Meghan Maldonado of Hackensack, NJ, as a semifinalist in its Student Portfolio Competition. The national competition evaluates submissions on concept, content, context, and execution of the designs. Maldonado will graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design in May 2023.

“The ASID national Student Portfolio Competition is the gold standard for portfolios of interior design majors,” said Jeffery McCullough, Professor, Interior Design, Berkeley College School of Professional Studies, who serves as faculty advisor to the Berkeley College student chapter of ASID. “Meghan Maldonado rose to the occasion and created a gold standard portfolio that showcases her strong balance of creative and technical skills. To have that recognized by ASID is a real exclamation point on the academic journey of one of Berkeley’s top students.”

Maldonado currently serves as a Design Assistant at Bold Interior Designs in Montclair, NJ. She said she has always been interested in the way interior design can change lives.

“We learned from the pandemic lockdown how much our environment affects the way we live our lives,” Maldonado said. “Our well-being is directly related to our environment. I want a career in a field that will make a difference in people’s lives.”

Maldonado said she is focused on improving her craft and gaining perspectives from various designers. Her long-term goal is to work on projects that assist residents in underprivileged communities.

“My portfolio showcases my favorite designs that are a celebration of color and intricate forms,” she said. “My style of design is all about color and interesting pieces, forms, and textures that catch the eye. I love to tell a story in a space.”

The work of Interior Design and Graphic Design students is displayed at The Gallery at Woodland Park, a 1,800-square-foot exhibit and presentation space on the campus in Woodland Park, NJ.
