The Commerce and Industry Association of New Jersey (CIANJ) honored Berkeley College among the companies that go above and beyond to give back to their communities at its annual Companies That Care awards ceremony on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at the Glen Ridge Country Club in Glen Ridge, NJ. The College was recognized for its campus food pantries, which mobilized to support students during the suspension of federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits in fall 2025.
CIANJ honored 40 companies in a variety of industries including finance, healthcare, higher education, nonprofits, and others.
“This year’s honorees exemplify what it means to contribute to the New Jersey community, through both charitable good works and corporate philanthropy,” said an article in COMMERCE magazine.
In November 2025, when more than 800,000 New Jersey residents faced the suspension of SNAP benefits, Berkeley College Foundation Campus Food Pantries in Woodland Park, Newark, and New York City mobilized immediately – distributing emergency food bags with staple items, offering online ordering and on-site shopping, and sharing practical recipes to help students stretch every resource.
“When food insecurity surges, the Berkeley College Foundation Campus Food Pantries respond with urgency, compassion, and resolve,” said James Marshmon, Manager, Berkeley College Foundation Food Pantries, New Jersey. “Our students should never have to choose between feeding their families and their education.”
In just five semesters, the pantries have fulfilled more than 3,300 student orders. Understanding that many students are adult learners supporting families, the pantries also provide essential household items, including baby diapers, cleaning supplies, and feminine hygiene products.
Each semester, Berkeley College faculty, staff, students, and alumni volunteer at the Community FoodBank of New Jersey. In October 2025, the College hosted higher education leaders at the College Food Pantry Forum, advancing best practices in food security and compassionate service.
